Solar train through Europe

Passenger "green train", which will be the route from Paris to Amsterdam,  moved to the first test of the times, using electricity from solar panels.

International high-speed train linking Paris and Amsterdam will be the first in Europe to one of his section on using electricity obtained from solar panels installed on the tunnel over the railway, AFP quoted.

The first passenger "green train" in Europe has crossed the road from Antwerp to the border with the Netherlands, using solar energy.

Tunnel in Antwerp, Belgium in the north, 3.6 miles long and worth 15.6 million euros, will be covered with 16,000 solar panels area of 50,000 square meters, the size of eight football stadiums.

The electricity will supply the infrastructure on the railway, lighting, signals and serve the needs of the train, and will be delivered to Antwerp.

Belgian company builds panels for solar energy "Enfiniti" which will produce 3,300 megawatt-hours of electricity a year, equal to the average annual consumption of approximately 950 families.

Panels will save 47.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions during the two decades. The application of solar energy is considered a method for reducing carbon emissions from the sector railways.

"Using electricity produced immediately, eliminate energy losses and transportation costs," said the director of "Enfiniti" Steven de Tolenaere.

The company hopes that this project is to develop a new installation in the U.S. and elsewhere, saying that the railway sheds ideal places for such installation in the future.

The possibility of applying such technology is considered in the U.S. on the fast track Tucson-Phoenix, Arizona.

In Italy, the EU finance installing solar panels on the roof of the train, which provide electricity for air conditioning coaches.

France is also considering the introduction of these technologies for use electricity for lighting and air conditioning trains in the region of Poitou-Sarent.

  1. This news comes in the same month that Blackfriars station in London begin running high-speed trains powered by the largest array of solar panels in the UK in 2012. http://www.solarpanelsblog.co.uk/2011/10/blackfriars-solar-pv-bridge-install-london/
